What we built
Most fence problems start at the posts. Frost heave pushes shallow posts up and out of line, and a sagging gate usually means a weak hinge post.
On this fence we used 6x6 posts instead of standard 4x4s and set them in concrete footings about 4 ft deep, below the frost line. Post caps keep water off the post tops. The gates were built to match the fence and hung on the same heavy posts.
