What pushes the price up
- Board-on-board and horizontal styles, which use more boards than a single-sided fence
- Taller fences, lattice tops and decorative caps
- Slopes that need stepped or racked sections
- Rocky or heavy clay soil, tree roots and tight access for post holes
- Extra gates, heavy-duty hardware and steel posts
- Removing a long run of old fence
What keeps it down
- Straight runs on level ground
- Sharing the cost of a boundary fence with a neighbour
- Chain link or pressure-treated wood where privacy isn't the main goal
- Keeping sound posts when replacing only boards, where it makes sense
