Do I need a permit for a deck in East York?

East York is part of the City of Toronto, which requires a building permit for a deck more than 60 cm (24 in) above the ground. Lower decks don't need a building permit but still have to meet zoning, including setbacks from property lines.

How tall can a fence be in East York?

Under the City of Toronto fence bylaw, a residential fence can be up to 2.5 m in the rear yard and 2.0 m in the side yard. In the front yard, the limit is 1.2 m within 2.4 m of the street and 2.0 m beyond that.

I share a wall with my neighbour. Can I add a privacy screen to my deck?

Can a new fence go right on the property line?

It can, but it's best to confirm where the line is and agree with your neighbour first. If there's any doubt about the line, a survey is the safest way to settle it before building.
