A building permit is needed for a deck more than 60 cm (24 in) above the ground.

Front yard fence

1.2 m near street · 2 m

1.2 m within 2.4 m of the street, 2.0 m farther back.

Rear and side yard fence

2.5 m rear · 2 m side

Maximum residential heights. Fences within 2.4 m of a driveway must be open construction near the lot line.

Trees

30 cm

A permit is needed to injure a private tree 30 cm or wider, and footings can count. In ravine areas, trees of any size are protected.

Do I need a permit for a deck in Toronto?

Toronto is part of the City of Toronto, which requires a building permit for a deck more than 60 cm (24 in) above the ground. Lower decks don't need a building permit but still have to meet zoning, including setbacks from property lines.

How tall can a fence be in Toronto?

Under the City of Toronto fence bylaw, a residential fence can be up to 2.5 m in the rear yard and 2.0 m in the side yard. In the front yard, the limit is 1.2 m within 2.4 m of the street and 2.0 m beyond that.

Can you build if the only access is through a laneway or the house?

Usually, yes. We look at access during the site visit and plan how materials come in and debris goes out. Tight access can affect the schedule and cost, so we include it in the quote rather than surprising you later.

My fence is close to a neighbour's driveway. Does that change anything?

It can. The City of Toronto requires fences within 2.4 m of a driveway to be open construction for the first 2.4 m from the lot line where the driveway starts, so drivers can see. We lay out that section to meet the rule.
