Every repair starts with the frame
Boards are easy to see. The problems that matter are usually underneath.
Posts and footings
Leaning, sinking or rotted posts, and footings that have heaved with frost.
Ledger board
The connection to the house. A failing ledger is one of the most serious deck problems.
Joists and beams
Rot, cracks, sagging and spacing. Composite boards need tighter spacing than most old decks have.
Railings and stairs
Loose posts, wobbly guards and uneven steps are safety items, not cosmetic ones.
Repair options
From a few boards to a full resurface
- Board replacement: swap damaged or rotted boards
- Resurfacing: new wood or composite boards on a sound frame
- Structural repairs: new posts, footings, beams or added joists
- Stairs and railings: rebuild or upgrade to aluminum or glass
- Rebuild: remove the old deck and start fresh when the frame is done

Deck repair questions
Should I repair or replace my deck?
If the posts, beams and joists are solid and properly supported, replacing boards, stairs or railings saves money. If the frame is soft, the footings have moved or the ledger at the house is failing, a rebuild is the safer choice. We'll show you what we find.
Can you resurface my deck with composite?
Often, but only if the joists are spaced closely enough for the boards you choose and the frame is in good shape. Some older decks need extra joists added first.
My deck feels bouncy. Is it dangerous?
Bounce usually means joists that are undersized, spaced too far apart or missing blocking. It isn't always dangerous, but it should be checked, especially on a raised deck.
Do deck repairs need a permit?
Replacing boards on the same frame usually doesn't. Rebuilding the structure, raising the deck or changing its size can. We check with the city when the work goes beyond like-for-like repairs.
